Not writing enough

Don’t know what’s wrong with me, except I have had a pretty unpleasant cold for almost two weeks.

I haven’t been photographing food much, and I’ve been writing even less, about life or food.

So, food – I made Mark’s mom’s sour cream waffles for brunch today. And bacon from the new pig, and cut up fruit. And fresh cranberry scones. No pics of any of that, but I also made a sweet potato pie with a meringue crust. Mark and I had a slice each, and I took it to work Monday morning.

Sweet potato pie with a pecan graham cracker crust and brown sugar meringue – that likes to slip off – on top.

I’m having a terrible time deciding what desserts to make for Thanksgiving, but at least that pie has cured me of wanting to to make sweet potato.

I was all set to make this pumpkin pie to take to Al & Emma’s on Wednesday, and then make my regular pumpkin mousse and turkey-shaped cookies, and a pear-apple-dried cherry crumble, for our Black Friday Thanksgiving. But then there would be no actual pies at the Friday dinner and that just doesn’t seem right. Plus I came across this shot from a few years ago:

Two hedgehog apple pies, and two pumpkin, 2014

and felt like we couldn’t really do without actual pie.

Looks like in 2010, I made rhubarb pie, and cherry pie, and the turkey cookies. Wonder if I made the mousse, too.

hmm, I have a lot of rhubarb in the freezer … but I think I will go with two pumpkin pies, turkey-shaped cookies, and the pear-apple-dried cherry crumble. No mousse this year. I think I like it more than anyone else. Maybe I’ll make a single batch of mousse and one pumpkin pie … ooh I like that idea. [In fact, slab pumpkin pie won – see next post.]

Images in the slide show are a stay at home Friday night, loading the dishwasher with a glass of red wine at hand; the new green walls in the dining room, and the new blue walls in the living room – and no I didn’t make that juggler print, I inherited it from my parents – the prints on cloth in the boxes and patchworked are mine; the Thanksgiving turkey from Matt & Susan Smith that arrived home frozen on Saturday; a weird kind of scarey poster I saw at the laundromat on Friday, before I came home and had the glass of wine; a Scottish breakfast courtesy Biff Blumfumgagne – also weird and somewhat scarey? no not as much as the poster – I’d definitely eat the beans, eggs too; and the 10# bucket has come out, filled with AP (all purpose) flour that I picked up at Woodman’s Sunday, unfortunately I didn’t go the craft fair at the Harmony, but I do have butter and flour and jam laid in for jam cookies that I intend to bake Thursday. And, since cookie season looms, I’m recycling a cookie pic from last May for the featured image.
