{"id":7932,"date":"2013-11-06T11:37:22","date_gmt":"2013-11-06T16:37:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/debslunch.com\/debslunchblog\/?p=7932"},"modified":"2013-11-09T20:04:13","modified_gmt":"2013-11-10T01:04:13","slug":"life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/debslunch.com\/debslunchblog\/life\/","title":{"rendered":"Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Continuing on the theme of being not just busy busy, but stupid busy this fall, I am on day 2 of advising week, 34 30-minute appointments scheduled to discuss grad students in the Library &amp; Info Studies program&#8217;s spring 2014 course selections. And how they&#8217;re doing in their program, in general.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re mostly good students, so despite my horrific looking calendar, below, it&#8217;s actually kind of fun to have the chance to chat with all of them. And, I also really like the opportunity to switch to the advisor role, rather than the teacher, sometimes. It&#8217;s an easier relationship &#8211; when I am the teacher, I grade them, and they&#8217;re afraid of me. I&#8217;m &#8220;what does <em>she<\/em> want?&#8221; on this assignment, so I&#8217;ll give them the A they want. I was determined to work on my ISAS class paper Tuesday in that two hour gap, but I somehow found other things to fill the time &#8211; like endless emails, and reading resumes and CVs for a hiring committee that I&#8217;m on, and checking in with the students in the two classes I am teaching and, and, and &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday evening we hosted 6 students for one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwalumni.com\/home\/wasb.aspx\">WASB<\/a> Dinners on WI &#8211; I&#8217;ve done this a bunch before: <a href=\"https:\/\/debslunch.com\/debslunchblog\/2011\/11\/09\/on-a-happier-note\/\">2011<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/debslunch.com\/debslunchblog\/2011\/03\/31\/fancy-schmancy-desserts-for-college-kids\/\">2011<\/a>,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/debslunch.com\/debslunchblog\/2010\/03\/22\/a-whole-weekend-with-no-blogging\/\">2010<\/a> &#8211; I&#8217;m sure there are more; watch for more links as I trawl my blogs. Yes, here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/debslunch.blogspot.com\/2006\/04\/no-i-havet-been-writing-that-much.html\">April 2006<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/debslunch.blogspot.com\/2006\/11\/and-what-abut-food.html\">November 2006<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/debslunch.blogspot.com\/2007\/03\/spring-weather-i-like.html\">March 2007 that cancelled<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/debslunch.blogspot.com\/2008\/04\/blogging-is-first-casualty.html\">April 2008<\/a>,\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/debslunch.blogspot.com\/2009\/04\/joy-of-leftovers.html\">April 2009.<\/a> This time I made a big pot of <a title=\"Black Bean &amp; Butternut Squash Chili\" href=\"https:\/\/debslunch.com\/debslunchblog\/recipes\/black-bean-butternut-squash-chili\/\">squash and black been chili <\/a>(with pinto beans), and had REAP Pie Palooza leftover lettuce for a big salad, <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=m_xcJXG1wyUC&amp;lpg=PA96&amp;ots=zgJUeQgu2t&amp;dq=ovens%20of%20brittany%20bailey's&amp;pg=PA96#v=onepage&amp;q=ovens%20of%20brittany%20bailey's&amp;f=false\">Ovens Bailey&#8217;s corn-oat muffins<\/a>, chips, and more Pie Palooza leftovers &#8211; Willy Street Co-op pumpkin pie, for dessert. \u00a0 This was a particularly talkative group, more nice kids, like my grad students, so even though Mark and Toni and Rach all helped, I wasn&#8217;t finished doing the dishes until somewheres around 9:45.
