… in my last post.
Friday was a work from home day, but I didn’t have any meetings until noon, so I started the day with a bike ride through the Arb, stopping by the library to pick up a hold book and return a cookbook that I decided to buy, finally swinging by Penzey’s. They’d had a promotion, buy anything and get a free (tiny, 2 oz.) bottle of vanilla. It ended Thursday, so I ordered for pick up on Friday because I didn’t have time to go over there on Thursday.
While I was off for the ride, I left shallots and tomatoes roasting in the oven for a roasted tomato-shallot-basil sauce.
My roasted mixture was only 2 cups so I bought a can of tomato sauce at the corner store to wind up with a better volume of sauce.
My plan is to use for lasagna, and also over turkey-zucchini meatballs, since I’m sure all the recommendations that the Dr. will be giving me (even if I’m still saying fuck off to them) are going to be to eat more lean protein. Like turkey meatballs.
I worked the rest of the afternoon, then washed my hair and we ate a some-assembly-required dinner – mostly kimchi biscuit sandwiches, Mark’s had bacon, mine had homemade zucchini pickles, lower fat since the biscuits already have cheese in them, and Mark finished the coleslaw and I had salad – greens with balsamic vinagrette.
Then we headed off to see Sense & Sensibility at APT. We liked it, but we’re suckers for anything Austen. It had some clever staging where you heard one side of a conversation as that group of people was moving past the other side of the conversation. The casting was pretty good, I just thought the actor they had play Edward was a little stiff. Of course my opinions are formed by the 1995 Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant Sense & Sensibility, so the APT actor’s only flaw, probably, for me, is that he simply is not Hugh Grant. Like for some people, Colin Firth is the only Mr. Darcy, although I have to admit that since the Joe Wright, Keira Knightly, Matthew Macfadyen version from 2005, Macfadyen has become my favorite Darcy. And Colin Firth is the best Mr. Darcy in the Bridget Jones films instead. For me, anyways. It is a matter of opinion, of course.
And the ribs were kind of a disaster – I let the coals burn down to all the way grey, but they still burnt to a crisp on the grill. The grilled corn and potatoes were pretty perfect though, to make up.
Today for brunch we had deep dish quiche with collards and sausage and red peppers, something I’d been wanting to try since we enjoyed the deep dish quiche at Floriole in Chicago. I don’t think I have the custard to filling ratio quite right as yet – too much greens to egg – but the crust is good, and looking at the picture reminds me that I got leeks in my CSA box, too, so maybe another try with leeks is in order.
And John & Megan went to New York City.
PS – Sunday night, I made the leftover quiche crust into an apple galette.
