Friday morning I broke a mirror. Well, maybe – it’s possible it was already broken before I dropped it. It’s an old makeup mirror that used to be able to stand in its blue plastic frame, but the frame’s been gone for a long time, so it’s this approximately 6-inch round mirror with a magnifying side and a regular side, that’s usually lying under a pile of clothes and magazines on the back of the toilet until I haul it maybe 10 times a year to use to check how my hair looks on the back of my head, reflecting in the bathroom mirror. I knocked it to the floor pulling out some magazines, and when I picked it up the regular side that I use most, was cracked. But it could easily have been sitting there broken by someone else for weeks. That’s what I’m choosing to believe. I tossed it in the trash.
All day Friday the radio news talked about the convergence of how it was Good Friday and Passover and Ramadan. Saturday it was still Passover and Ramadan, and full moon. Sunday is still Passover and Ramadan, and Easter, and an almost full moon. And Monday is tax day.
So far things mostly seem OK for me, not experiencing terrible bad luck (yet), although this afternoon (Sunday) I felt so headachey and tired I did a quick Covid test. Happily here’s the results.
We did a bunch of entertaining – Waismans came for Passover, five of them and three of us, so eight at the table. There were two approximately 16-year-olds: Waisman’s oldest son, and our exchange student; then their middle son is 13 or 14; their daughter is 11. Almost. Plus two 40-something parents and me and Mark, 66 and 71. Waisman’s brought the matzoh ball soup, and I made chicken and farfel stuffing and roasted broccoli. And desserts – flourless chocolate cake and meringues. I didn’t make the matzoh butter crunch this year (see overleaf) – Waisman’s brought some but our student can’t eat it with nuts on top. I like to put Heath chips on, and I have some of those leftover from cookie season, I always over-buy for the chocolate toffee bars – but those have traces of nuts in them too.
Then Sunday, Al Emma came for brunch. I was going to make sausage & red pepper quiche, but made strata instead because no one was eating the challah from last week. And salad instead of potatoes. Banana bread and the buckwheat date muffins I always make from the leftover Haroset. I forgot to put out the Easter candy, though.
After brunch, I went for a walk and got a cup of coffee and thought I could drop off my knives to get sharpened – even though they don’t sharpen on Sundays, I thought I’d drop the knives off and pick them up Monday after work. But all the stores in that little strip were closed, so guess that will have to be for another day.
Then I worked a bunch but I’m done with that for now.
We get to have leftover flourless chocolate cake and ice cream for our TV watching snack tonight. I bought some fancy ice creams to go with, Häagen Dazs and Talenti. And there’re chocolate chip and pecan meringues left, too.
A nice Sunday night.
