Madison Gas & Electric is shutting off our electricity tomorrow morning, so I guess I really have to take the day off from work, although I never have been too good about participating in events in honor of Dr. King. Two years ago when I was in Seattle I looked up all the marches I could go to, and there was one that started at my niece’s former high school, so quite close by, and went downtown so a nice hike. But instead I used the day to make an apron with iron-on’s of vegetable images since I was scheduled to teach a class on how to do that at the Garden Expo in Madison when I got back. And I took the dog to the dog park.
If the power comes back on in the afternoon tomorrow, I’d like to make some masks with the fabric I had printed with Jen’s 2020 kissoff design. I made an iron on with a repeat that I like and also ordered some printed for me, but of course I screwed up the layout and ended up with giant prints instead of the repeat. I re-ordered more fabric yesterday on the hope of getting the repeat better, meanwhile the big ones are pretty much the right size for one set of lips per mask so maybe that will look OK. I got some dinosaur fabric for the lining, but my peppers would look OK too.
I started writing this Sunday, the day before MLK. We took our usual walk, and got coffee. I thought the ice droplets were a nice augmentation of the lights in this garland on the overhang at Colectivo.
When we got back we had brunch: avocado toast with poached egg, mashed potato cake (made from the potatoes we had with our Saturday night supper of beef stew and Irma Rombauer’s “no-fail” rolls. See below.)
Last Monday I started the week with chocolate cake and oranges.
Saturday I also ate oranges, this time with buckwheat date muffins.
Today, Monday MLK day, when we got back from our walk and the power was on, I reset all the clocks, and then I ate most of two of those buckwheat date muffins, making sure to get the parts with the most dates. Then I did a little work, and now I think I’ll go make those masks.
