I got this in my email this morning.
So, I went into a little Jerry Garcia, G. Dead memory lane. I made this Days Between graphic my facebook profile pic, just like I did last year. I didn’t even need to re-download it, I already had it in my photos.
I listened to Days Between from a show at the Rosemont in 1993, my favorite version of the song, I think.
I dug out one of my last remaining G. Dead shirts to wear. It’s kinda clever – plain black in front and this is the back.
I ran my phone battery down listening to this livestream in Jerry’s honor, that I halfway liked and halfway got tired of, because there was so much stuff recorded years ago; not really live.
I processed the corn I bought at the market while I was listening to the stream, shucked, cut it off the cobs, and blanched. Three 3-cup yogurt buckets of corn and corn cob broth. So now even if we don’t have a big Thanksgiving dinner, at least I have some corn in the freezer.
John told me about this YouTube of the Dead’s performances & vacation trip to Egypt in 1978, “Rockin’ The Cradle & The Vacation Tapes”. The vacation tapes part, showing the Dead and their entourage wandering the streets in Cairo, sightseeing, and floating in a boat on the Nile, reminded me of the couple of times when I was on Dead tour, where we stayed at the same hotel as the band, and got to see them having breakfast and in the elevator, and getting into cars. But probably the best part is the concert footage, where they’re jamming with local musicians, during a lunar eclipse. Phil Lesh writes about it in his book, Searching for the Sound. Man, they’d never let them do that now – they set up a stage right at the foot of the pyramids with their giant rack of amps & speakers; you can see the Sphinx behind them.
Now it’s August. Jerry Garcia would be 78, and I can apply for medicare. I just made my blog banner my 2011 birthday cake. I wasn’t even 60 yet, back then.
I had cheese toast with tomatoes & cumbers for Saturday breakfast. We bought one little heirloom tomato along with a basket of slicers and another basket of cherry tomatoes, and the little heirloom seemed just right for breakfast.
John & Megan had carry out bagels. Megan called it WI in Chi breakfast.
