Starting my Saturday with a little freezing. The election is Tuesday and I attended the Saturday morning training where we pick up our giant totes of all the stuff we need, and I drove because the Chief Inspector, and my neighbor, that I work with, didn’t have a car that day. She wanted to park in her work lot at GEF II, one of the big state office buildings. When we got there, she handed me her badge to swipe us in, and said, “You keep this”, and I, unthinking, tossed it on the dashboard, and left it in the car.
About 15 minutes into the training I started thinking, “how do we get back into the car?” She had to call the Capitol Police to get let in, which is why I was left waiting freezing on the corner. While I’m sure she was just as freezing, waiting for the Capitol Police, who first went to the wrong building and then the wrong entrance of the right building.
With the tote.
After I dropped my Chief & the tote at her house – with plans in place for me to go back later that afternoon to do the pre-election prep, like tabbing the poll books with the letters of the alphabet for easy flipping – I went off to try to fit in a little grocery shopping before my second training of the day, Film Fest volunteering.
Cheddar jalapeño bagel stick from Whole Foods, consumed while shopping at Target. (Shown here on the way in to Target)
After the film fest training I had time to go home and eat a second breakfast at 2:45.
Hard squash hummus, with greens lightly dressed with olive oil & balsamic on top. yum. There’s still a handful of greens, and I hope I get to eat this combination again before the greens go slimey.
Back over to the Chief’s to tab poll books, then I finally came home to make Spanish rice with chicken – using up the Whole Foods grilled chicken breasts that Rach left – and collards with bacon that I over salted, for dinner. I’d bought the collards thinking I’d make collards with peanut sauce, because I have a jar of peanut sauce I made a few weeks back, in the fridge, but that will have to get used another day. Maybe with broccoli and tofu.
After dinner, we went to see Mumford & Sons, with like 10,000 other people at the hockey arena. It was fun – Marcus Mumford is one of those guys who manages to be pretty personable even with a huge crowd like that. I’ve still got his voice in my mind, not necessarily anything from Saturday, more like Another Day, Another Time. Dylan’s “I was young when I left home“. I did hear “Guiding Light” from the new album, and show opener, in the Peet’s at the Union this afternoon.

Because, yes, I’m so lame, I’m still working on this on Monday.
Remember my stuff to cook list? One of things on it was this wheatberry & lentil soup. I made it a week ago Sunday, when I got back from Chicago, and was helping Al do his taxes. I thought it’d be a nice healthy thing that Rach and I could have for dinner on a chilly March night, but it was really meh. Maybe because I used frozen kale, that had been chopped too fine, maybe because I used water instead of broth. Anyways, I thought I might kind of pilaf it, but Saturday morning before I started in on all the trainings it went into the compost. Hope it doesn’t draw the racoons back.
Sunday morning I made scones, then worked a bunch, then went for a walk to the library. Which was packed – 3:00 on the last afternoon of early voting ending at 4:30. And I finally made the Ashure cereal, also on my stuff to cook list. One of the pans got a little too dark. And yes, in case you were wondering, it is very much like lightly spiced sugar crisp, or super golden crisp, as Post started calling it when they decided it was bad to have the word “sugar” in the name of a cereal. One of my childhood faves for sure. Sugar Bear.
In the evening we went to a MACN supper club dinner to benefit the Goodman food pantry.
I had the fish, and Mark had the prime rib. We were going to share stuff, but the prime rib was really rare – too rare for me. The fish was baked with a crispy crumb crust and came with a blood orange sauce that was really good. I liked what I guess was the Lyonanaise potatoes the best, though they seemed more like American fries to me – baked slices with a little onion – and the creamed spinach and roasted vegetables were really good, too.
